Sean Kang

Sean was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the age of 7, and since then, he has started to learn various activities. One of these was art, and he began taking drawing classes at a local art academy in the 2nd grade. Although he didn’t express strong feelings about liking or disliking drawing, he showed interest and focus when working with various materials at the art academy. He especially preferred using markers to draw the outlines of objects and then fill them in with color. It seemed that he felt more secure drawing clear lines with markers or pens rather than using watercolors or pastels, which have softer edges. As his drawing skills improved, he learned to create artwork on specific themes under the focused guidance of his teacher, gradually developing his ability to express his own invisible thoughts and feelings.

Through drawing, Sean showed interest in expressing his observations and creativity. As he entered middle school, he naturally had more opportunities to participate in art competitions and prepare for high school entrance exams. However, the pressure of meeting deadlines became a challenging struggle for him, and unfortunately, it led to a loss of interest in art. He is currently taking a break from it. He eagerly anticipates the day when he can joyfully return to the art projects he once enjoyed.

Sean enjoys exercising whenever he has the time. He loves moving his body and is very interested in building muscle. He hopes to learn stage combat in the future. He is also learning to play the guitar, practicing diligently each day with the thought that he might one day teach guitar to young children. His only artistic project at the moment is making miniatures, where he takes great interest in assembling small pieces with glue.

Sean is a very honest and sincere child. While social interactions can be somewhat awkward for him, he knows how to interact appropriately with his non-disabled peers and engages well in everyday conversations. He is a brave child who is unafraid to take on challenges, thinking about the importance of becoming independent from his parents like his older siblings. He travels alone by train to LA, attends school, and even works part-time. He is somewhat vulnerable to stressful situations and can get frustrated with his friends’ playful antics, but he understands and accepts his Autism, knowing when to seek help from those around him. I am very excited to see Sean grow into a remarkable adult in the future.

미술>

Sean은 7살때 Autism Spectrum Disorder진단을 받고 나서부터 여러가지 다양한 활동을 배우기 시작했습니다. 그중의 하나가 미술이였고, 2학년때 동네 미술학원에서 그림을 배우기 시작했습니다. 

평소에 그림 그리는 것에 대해 좋아한다거나 싫어한다는 의사표현은 분명히 하지 않았지만, 미술학원에서 다양한 재료를 이용해서 작업하는 것에 흥미를 가지고 집중을 잘 하는 편이었습니다. 

특히 마커를 이용해서 사물의 outline을 그리고 그 안에 색을 채우는 식으로 그림그리는 것을 선호했습니다. 

수채화나 파스텔같은 경계가 모호한 그림보다 마커나 펜을 이용해 뚜렷한 선을 그리는 것에 안정감을 느끼는 것 같았습니다. 그리는 실력이 점점 향상되면서, 선생님의 집중적인 지도하에 특정한 주제를 가지고 그림을 그리는 것을 배워나갔고, 점차 눈에 보이지 않는 자기만의 생각과 느낌들을 표현하는 방식을 익혀갔습니다. 

그림을 통해 스스로 관찰한 바를 표현하고, 생각나는 것을 그려내는 것에 흥미를 보였던 Sean은 중학교에 올라가면서 자연스럽게 미술대회나 고교입시를 위한 미술을 할 기회가 많아졌습니다. 그리고 마감기한에 맞춰서 그림을 그리는 과정이 Sean에게는 힘든 도전으로 다가왔고 안타깝게도 그림작업에 흥미를 잃게 되는 계기가 되었습니다. 

지금은 잠시 쉬어가는 중입니다.

언젠가 즐겁게 미술작업을 했던 그때로 다시 돌아가 작업을 시작할 날을 손꼽아 기다립니다.

취미>

Sean은 시간이 날 때 마나 운동하는 것을 즐깁니다. 몸을 움직이는 것을 매우 좋아하고 근육을 키우는 것에 관심이 많습니다. 이 다음에 무술연기(Stage combat)를 꼭 배워보고 싶어합니다.

또한 기타를 배우고 있습니다. 나중에 어린 아이들에게 기타를 가르치는 사람이 될 수도 있다는 생각을 하며 매일 열심히 연습하고 있습니다. 

유일한 아트작업은 미니어쳐 만들기입니다. 작은 조각들을 하나하나 풀칠하며 만들어가는 것에 흥미가 많습니다. 

자랑>

Sean은 매우 정직하고 성실한 아이입니다. 사회적 상호작용이 다소 어색하지만 비장애인 또래 친구들과 적절하게 어울릴 줄도 알고 일상적인 대화도 잘합니다. 형들처럼 언젠가 부모로부터 독립해야 한다는 생각에 무엇이든 주저하지 않고 도전하는 씩씩한 아이입니다. 혼자서 기차를 타고 LA를 가고 학교를 다니며, part time으로 일도 합니다. 다소 스트레스받는 상황에 취약한 편이고 친구들의 짖궂은 몸장난에 버럭 화를 내긴 하지만, 자신이 가지고 있는 Autism이라는 장애를 이해하고 잘 수용하며, 필요할 때 주변에 도움을 청할 줄도 압니다. 앞으로 더 멋진 성인으로 성장하게 된 Sean의 모습이 무척 기대됩니다.
